about the book

Unstoppable: The Unlikely Story of a Silicon Valley Godfather

One of the best books on Silicon Valley, Roy L. Clay Sr., recounts his struggles during the life-threatening Jim Crow period. He left his home state, Missouri, to lead the HP team that created the minicomputer progenitor, paving the way for modern-day operating systems (e.g., MS Windows) and other business computing applications.

“Unstoppable” is one of the best inspirational books where Roy shares the journey of his entry and rise in the tech world. David Packard of Hewlett-Packard and Tom Perkins of Kleiner Perkins venture capital company recognized Roy’s great mathematical skills and innovative vision, looking beyond his race. By pairing with Kleiner Perkins, Clay consulted on early-stage investments in Intel, Tandem Computers, and Compaq Computers that bore fruit in the form of a combined valuation of $135+ Billion.

In his teens, Roy survived the unjust Ferguson, Missouri Police custody which fueled him with the drive to make something of himself. He traveled west and became a trailblazer in the tech industry. “Unstoppable” is a Silicon Valley based true story which will serve as an inspiration for STEAM youth of color and everyone, encouraging them to make their mark in the tech world. If people like Roy L. Clay can overcome all obstacles despite racism to help make the world a better place, others can too.

The story will resonate with elders who lived and overcame the Jim Crow era and its injustices by putting their hand on the wheel to help bring about change. The tale encapsulates the theme of a strong family love as Roy’s passion was fueled by the Missouri traditions of his parents and eight siblings, as well as his beloved wife Virginia and three sons.

The misconception that there are few or no black role models is erased by “Unstoppable”, which is a Silicon Valley based true story. It is filled with people, places, and things that paint a montage of life events, bringing to life the history of African-American people in a personable and profound way.

His thirst and eagerness for knowledge motivated others, opening the doors of Silicon Valley for people of color who now rightly view him as the godfather of Silicon Valley.

Roy Clay has written a masterpiece that is captivating from its action-packed introduction to its soul stirring ending. His inspirational words re-count a near century long journey that captures his unlikely rise from humble Midwest beginnings to an American technology pioneer and Silicon Valley entrepreneur. I highly recommend this accurate account of how his unrelenting vision and determination helped pave the way for me and many executives who came behind him. Thanks Roy, for opening doors, and thumbs up for this brilliant memoir that is a must read for all.   John W. Thompson, Chairman of the Board, Illumina (former Chairman of the Board, Microsoft)

I first met Roy in 2000 and he instantly embraced the Rainbow PUSH Coalition’s campaign for equity, diversity and inclusion in Silicon Valley and the tech industry.   He talked to me about his personal experience, where his peers in several companies rose to the highest heights while he was stifled.  There was no talent deficit, but an opportunity deficit.  But Roy proved as he has all of his life – battling segregation in St. Louis to breaking down walls of exclusion in Silicon Valley – that he would be unstoppable. Roy’s exhilarating story is a model for all to keep hope alive and never give up on your fight for dignity and respect.   Roy’s book is a must read and a guide for all those striving for excellence and equality.   Reverend Jesse L. Jackson, President and Founder, Rainbow PUSH Coalition. American civil rights leader and activist
